This week’s Top 5 Tuesday topic is debut novels. The books that I included on this list are all books that left me anticipating the author’s next release. Some of the books on this list are a few years old, and the author has already released their sophomore novel, and in some cases, I’ve already read the author’s sophomore novel. Either way, these are all books that I loved, and I think they were all excellent debuts.
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: This is currently my favourite book, and I cannot stop talking about it. It combined some of my favourite things (romantic comedies, The West Wing, Hamilton) into an amazing book full of memorable and inspirational characters. I cannot wait to read Casey McQuiston’s next book, and I know that I’ll be preordering it as soon as it’s available, and until then, I’ll be vocally sharing my love for Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry and all things Red, White & Royal Blue.
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne: This book was a dangerous discovery for me, because it not only got me hooked on Sally Thorne, it got me hooked on romantic comedy books. I love Lucy Hutton, and Joshua Templeman and their office banter and mind games brought me so much joy. This book literally made me squeal with delight, and I’m looking forward to reading 99 Percent Mine very soon.
Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch: I read this book last summer, and I’m still talking about it. I loved the characters, the food descriptions, and how it made me want to travel to Italy. I’ve already read Love & Luck, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else Jenna Evans Welch releases because I’m sure it’ll be amazing.
The Field Guide to the North American Teenager by Ben Philippe: I read this book shortly after it was released, and I was a big fan of it. I enjoyed Ben Philippe’s sense of humour, and this book had me laughing out loud in a lot of places. I’ll definitely be pre-ordering whatever Ben Philippe writes next because if it’s even half as enjoyable as his debut novel, it’ll be a great read.
Caraval by Stephanie Garber: Initially, I wasn’t sure if I was going to include this book, because I still haven’t read Legendary or Finale. I decided that I would include it because overall I did enjoy Caraval and when I’m in the mood for a fantasy adventure, I’m looking forward to reading the entire trilogy.
