A few months ago, I saw a bunch of fellow book bloggers posting about their O.W.L.s (Ordinary Wizarding Levels) and it looked like the people participating in the readathon were having a lot of fun. When I started seeing people post about their N.E.W.T.s (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests) I knew I had to join in on the fun.
The O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s are part of Book Roast’s Magical Readathon which was inspired by the Wizarding World. In this readathon, people pick a wizarding career and in April they sit for their O.W.L.s and try to read the books required for that career and in August, the sit for their N.E.W.T.s. Book Roast has done a phenomenal job creating the material and prompts for this event.
I decided to pick Librarian as my wizarding career which means that I have a lot of reading planned for this month. I also decided that I was going to be crazy and try to complete my O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s at the same time.
In total, I need to read twelve books this month to pass my O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s, which is going to be a challenge, but I’m looking forward to trying.
To be a librarian, there are five O.W.L.s that I need to complete. I’ve listed the subject, prompts, and what I’m going to read for them below.
Ancient Runes: Retelling:
Pride, Prejudice, And Other Flavours by Sonali Dev
Arithmancy: Work Written by More Than One Author:
Obsidio by Amie Kaufman And Jay Kristoff
Defence Against the Dark Arts: Reducto: Title Starts With An “R”:
Rebel Girls by Elizabeth Keenan (ARC)
History of Magic: Published At Least 10 Years Ago
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
Transfiguration: Sprayed Edges or Red Cover
Six of Crows By Leigh Bardugo
N.E.W.T.s are a little bit different from O.W.L.s in that you need to receive a certain grade in the subject to qualify for your chosen career. The grades are O (Outstanding), E (Exceeds Expectations), and A (Acceptable).
To be a librarian, there are three N.E.W.T.s that I need to complete. I’ve listed the subject, prompts, and what I’m going to read for them below.
O in Ancient Runes
A: Ehwaz (Partnership) – Read Recommended by A Friend
Thunderhead by Neal Schusterman
E: Book Written in Past Tense
Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch
O: Book That Has Been on Your TBR For Ages
Save The Date by Morgan Matson
E in Defence Against the Dark Arts
A: Book That’s Black Under the Dust Jacket
Toil and Trouble by Augusten Burroughs (ARC)
E: Gilderoy’s Memory Charm (First Book That You Remembered Just Now From Your TBR!)
99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne
E in History of Magic
A: Read A Fantasy
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
E: Read A Book That Includes A Map
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Overall, I’m really excited about participating in this readathon, and I hope that I manage to pass all of my O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s along the way!
