This month’s Top 5 Tuesday theme is Favourite Characters A-Z, and I had a blast brainstorming who I was going to talk about this month! This week, we’re dealing with the first five letters of the alphabet, and that means I get to talk about some of my all-time favourite characters this week!
Cather Avery from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell: Cath is always going to hold a special place in my heart because she reminded me of myself when I was in University. I went away to University, which left my Dad and Scamper alone at home for the first time. I was also quite socially awkward in University, and I preferred to stay in while others went out. When I read Fangirl for the first time, it was nice to find a character who I could relate to because their experience was similarish to mine. I also adore Cath because she’s a fangirl who prefers to spend her time in fictional worlds, which is something I will always support.
Stevie Bell from Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson: It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Stevie is included on this list because I cannot stop talking about how much I love her. The main reason why I love Stevie is that I think she’s brilliant and determined, and I loved reading about her trying to solve the Ellingham Mysteries. I also love that her character is multi-dimensional and flawed, which makes her feel like a real person.
Alex Claremont-Diaz from Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: Red, White and Royal Blue was one of my favourite reads of 2019, and a big reason for that was because of the main characters. I love Alex, and I really liked his drive and political interests and involvement. I also thought that he and Prince Henry made an excellent pair, and reading about them going from enemies to lovers brought me so much joy.
Arthur Dent from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams: There’s a lot of reasons why I love Arthur Dent, but the main reason is that he struggles to find a decent cup of tea. Arthur Dent is such an ordinary and average guy, and I just love reading about him being thrown into so many insane situations while still wearing his dressing gown. I also love Arthur because of the random things he appreciates and misses while on his intergalactic adventure.
David Eastman from Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson: I wasn’t planning on talking about two characters from the same book in one post, but David Eastman holds a special place in my heart. Every time I read the Truly Devious series, I want to reach through the pages and hug David. It’s clear that the character is going through a lot of stuff, and the tragedies happening around him don’t help. I know that a lot of people find him to be unlikable, but I can’t help but love him, probably because he’s the kind of person I would have been into when I was in high school.
