Hello everyone!
Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Bionic Bookworm, and it’s now hosted by Meeghan Reads. If you’re interested in participating, check out their wonderful blog to get the details and the prompts for each week!
March is a scavenger hunt month for Top Five Tuesday, which sounds like a ton of fun. This week’s prompt is books with doorways, which was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. I did enjoy scavenging my shelves though to find five books to fit this prompt.
Octavia Bloom and the Missing Key by Estelle Grace Tudor – This is the first book I thought of when I saw this week’s prompt. Octavia Bloom and the Missing Key was one of the finalists in the 2021 BBNYA competition and I recently posted by review of it here. This magical book features a secret doorway that leads to a fairy world and this secret doorway is featured prominently on the cover of this book. If you’re a fan of Middle Grade books, I highly recommend checking this book out if you’re looking for something quick and magical to read.

Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed – The cover of this book is covered in doorways, so it works exceptionally well for this week’s topic. I haven’t read this book yet, but it does feature the main characters going door-to-door to do some political canvasing. I don’t know when I’ll get to this book, but I am looking forward to reading it because political canvasing reminds me of The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis, which is one of my favourite books.

Nightbooks by J.A. White – Though the door itself isn’t visible on this cover, the cover does feature the main character standing in the doorway of a massive library. All I can say about this middle grade book is that it is scary. I started reading it a few months ago, but I had to put it down because I could not handle reading it before bed. I also don’t deal well with horror in general, so that might be why this middle grade book was too scary for me.

Verona Comics by Jennifer Dugan – Moving away from scary doorways, this book features the entrance to a comic book shop. I read this book last year and I enjoyed it. If I remember correctly, it’s a Romeo and Juliet inspired YA book that features two teens who fall for each other even though their parents own rival comic book shops. This book does feature some heavy moments, which should be expected given it’s Romeo and Juliet inspired, but it was an enjoyable read.

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket – It took me an embarrassingly long time to think about this book for this week’s prompt. The Bad Beginning is the book that got me into reading, yet I forgot that the cover features Count Olaf standing in a doorway. Now I just have to remember to check these books for the other scavenger hunt prompts this month.
