T5T Death Banner

Hello everyone!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Bionic Bookworm, and it’s now hosted by Meeghan Reads. If you’re interested in participating, check out their wonderful blog to get the details and the prompts for each week!

This week’s Top 5 Tuesday is Books About a Death. This was another topic that was easy to talk about, though I had to be careful to pick books that I can talk about without spoiling anything.

Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan – Last week when I was talking about books about a wedding, I mentioned Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. This week, when I’m talking about death, I’m going to talk about Rich People Problems. In Rich People Problems, the grandmother is dying, and members of her family are acting like vultures, trying to position themselves to benefit the most from her passing. Like the rest of the books in this series, this book is a lot of fun and I loved all of the drama.

This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper – In this book, the Foxman family has come together to sit shiva after the death of their father. It’s the first time they’ve all been together in years and lots of drama unfolds during that week. I found this book to be laugh-out-loud funny. I loved the characters, and I loved the drama. I also enjoyed the film adaption of this one, even if they left out some of my favourite scenes.

The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton – This book was a wild ride. I listened to the audiobook for it last year and I feel like it’s a book you need to reread to totally understand what’s going on. In this book, Aiden Bishop needs to find the identity of the person who killed Evelyn Hardcastle and he will wake up in the body of a different person each day until he figures it out. The book was confusing, but it was also full of twists and turns, and it was an enjoyable read.

Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim – In this book, Natalie Tan returns back home after her mother passes away. It’s been seven years since Natalie Tan spoke to her mother, so going back home and her mother’s death is a lot to process. While she’s home, she discovers that she’s inherited her grandmother’s restaurant. This book is full of community and delicious-sounding recipes, and I highly recommend it.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman – In this book, seven-year-old Elsa’s grandmother has died. Growing up, Elsa’s grandmother would tell her stories. After she dies, she leaves Elsa a stack of letters apologising to people she has wronged for Elsa to deliver. Adventure unfolds and Elsa learns that maybe the stories weren’t entirely fictional. I read this book a while ago and I remember thinking that it was sweet and heart-warming and I really enjoyed it. This book is also sometimes titled My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologies.

  1. You’ve got some interesting books in this post. The only one I’ve read is Evelyn Hardcastle so definitely a few for me to look into.

  2. Lots of Fredrik Backman books this week, but this is the first post I’ve seen about My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry. I’ll have to look this one up!!
Great list as usual, and I hope you had fun with this topic 💕
