Hello everyone!
Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Bionic Bookworm, and it’s now hosted by Meeghan Reads. If you’re interested in participating, check out their wonderful blog to get the details and the prompts for each week!
This week’s Top 5 Tuesday topic is Top 5 Magic Systems. I don’t read a lot of books with magic in them, and I tend to forget the details of most magic systems when I do read them. To compensate for this, I decided to adapt this prompt to talk about my Top 5 Books with Magic in them instead!
Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch – When I think about magic, I think about Peter Grant and Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale. The Rivers of London series is an urban fantasy mystery series, and it is excellent. It’s full of twists and turns and mysteries that make you want to keep reading. It’s also full of magical beings, which I have loved reading about.
Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston – Amari and the Night Brothers was my favourite read of 2020 and I am impatiently waiting for the sequel. This book takes place at the Bureau of Supernatural Investigations, and it provides a glimpse into the supernatural world that exists around us. Unsurprisingly, I’m struggling to remember the finer details of this book, but I do know that it was magical and an excellent read.
The Beast and the Bethany by Jack Meggitt-Phillips – This fun middle-grade book contains one of the most fearsome creatures I have ever encountered. The Beast is truly vile and evil, but he’s also pretty magical. Unfortunately, the Beast would really like to eat everyone, which makes his magic slightly terrifying.
Crumbs by Danie Stirling – This coming-of-age graphic novel is super cute and magical. One of the main characters is a seer, characters fly on brooms, and it features an amazing magical bakery. This book also contains a very sweet romance, which makes this book extra cute.
Fireborn by Aisling Fowler – I don’t remember if this book has magic in it, or if it’s just full of dangerous magical creatures. What I do remember is that I really liked this book, that the characters were excellent, it had a dangerous quest, and there was a squirrel named Widge. The second book in this series is coming out in Spring 2023, and I think I need to do a reread before that.
