This week’s Top 5 Tuesday topic is Top 5 Illustrated Books! This was a fun topic to write about, but it took a bit of effort to think about what books on my shelves have illustrations in them. Fortunately, with a little bit of exploring, I found five wonderful middle-grade books to talk about today.
Frostheart by Jamie Littler – Frostheart is a fun and magical book in general, but the illustrations add something special to it. To see the characters on the page, and what different creatures looked like added another layer to this story. I sometimes struggle with imagining what non-human characters look like, but the illustrations made all of the characters jump off the page. I also liked being able to see what The Frostheart looked like.
The Girl Who Speaks Bear by Sophie Anderson – This magical middle-grade book has some wonderful illustrations in it, but what makes it stand out is the border around some of the pages. Stories play a big part in this book, and when a story is being told, those pages have a special border around them with trees and animals and other small drawings. I thought this was a nice touch to make the stories standout and I thought it was very pretty.
Rainbow Grey by Laura Ellen Anderson – I haven’t read this book yet, but I have flipped through it enough times to say that I love the illustrations. Between the chapter headers, the little details on some pages, and all of the drawings of the characters, I know that the illustrations in this book are going to make the story stand out.
The Beast and the Bethany by Jack Meggitt-Phillips – This is such a fun book and I love the illustrations in it. I love that all of the chapters have a little illustration at the header, I think this is a great detail. I also like seeing the characters and some of the more fantastical things being drawn on the page. I also liked seeing some of the chaos and shenanigans drawn out on the page.
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman – This is another book where the illustrations really help bring it to life. Seeing the graveyard and the characters helped me imagine what was going on. I also liked that the illustrations helped show just how sinister the villain was in this book.
