A few weeks after marrying an attractive young widow, Gordon Cloade is tragically killed by a bomb blast in the London blitz. Overnight, the former Mrs Underhay finds herself in sole possession of the Cloade family fortune.

Shortly afterwards, Hercule Poirot receives a visit from the dead man’s sister-in-law who claims she has been warned by ‘spirits’ that Mrs Underhay’s first husband is still alive. Poirot has his suspicions when he is asked to find a missing person guided only by the spirit world. Yet what mystifies Poirot most is the woman’s true motive for approaching him…

Taken at the Flood is my most recent Poirot read. This book takes place in a small English village and features the widow of a dead millionaire, his family who feels like it just isn’t fair that she got everything, and a mysterious stranger who somehow winds up dead. It was full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end.

This story had quite a few characters and most of them had some sort of motive. This kept things interesting and I enjoyed seeing the bits of evidence fall into place.

I also enjoyed that this story took place after World War Two. I enjoyed the discussions about rationing and how difficult everything was post war. I don’t know how accurate everything was, but I could feel how difficult the war was on the characters and how it changed their way of life.

One thing I didn’t love about this one was the ending. I don’t want to a point anything, but I thought that one of the characters made a very poor life choice and I also think that Poirot made a poor choice with his “not being the police.”

  1. […] This was my Poirot book of the month. While I remember enjoying this one, ultimately it was a bit forgettable because I don’t remember much about it while I’m writing this. If you’re interested, here’s my review of Taken at the Flood. […]
